TIPS FOR CURIOUS TRAVELERS

Choose, get lost-there is no one way to reach a place. As Franz Kafka said, "the path is built only by traveling." We always advise our guests to experience the city spontaneously, as we do every day. But Venice is often unobtrusive in indulging, especially in its most hidden and characteristic places, which is why we suggest to our guests places that have something special or activities and events that allow them to see Venice from different angles.

SURREALISM AND MAGIC

Peggy Guggenheim Collection, April 9-September 26, 2022

Museum Barberini, Potsdam, Oct. 22, 2022-Jan. 29, 2023

A collaboration between the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and Museum Barberini, this is the first international exhibition to address the Surrealists' interest in magic, esotericism, mythology and the occult. With some sixty works at the Venetian venue from more than 40 major international institutions and private collections, the exhibition offers a broad and comprehensive overview of Surrealism as a whole, and examines the innumerable ways in which magic and the occult shaped its development, from Giorgio de Chirico's Metaphysical Painting to Max Ernst's iconic 1940 painting The Dressing of the Bride, to the occult imagery of the late works of Leonora Carrington and Remedios Varo. In general, artists adhering to the movement nurtured the notion of the artist as an alchemist, magician, or visionary, viewing magic as a form of poetic and philosophical discourse linked to processes of personal emancipation.

THE OTHER VIEW OF THE CITY

VENICE HISTORICAL REGATTA

The earliest records of the Historical Regatta are from the 13th century but it is probably much older since the city of Venice has always been projected onto the sea.

It takes place every year on the first Sunday of September.

The event commemorates the reception to Caterina Cornaro, wife of the King of Cyprus, who renounced her throne in favor of Venice.

During the Regata Storica, typical 16th-century boats parade in the Grand Canal with figures in typical costumes in memory of the Republic's glorious past. Once the parade is over, the Regattas, a series of races in different types of rowing boats, begin.

The full program includes the blessing of the gondolinos in Campo della Salute on Thursday and the presentation of the crews, preceded by a water parade on the Grand Canal starting from the Erbaria in Rialto.

On Sunday, September 5, the afternoon begins with a parade along the Grand Canal of historic boats with costumed figures, gondolas and boats from the Venetian rowing associations.

This will be followed by the actual races:
- Regata de le Maciarele e de le Schie: regatta on two-oared mascarete boats reserved for boys.
- REGATA DEI GIOVANISSIMI SU PUPPARINI A DUE OMI
- REGATTA OF THE CAORLINE ON SIX OARS
- International Universities Rowing Challenge on 8-oar galleons between the crew of Ca' Foscari and Iuav Universities of Venice and teams from other universities
